How we compared Barotrauma server hosts
We compared each host’s live Barotrauma product on what matters for a co-op submarine server: a London or nearby location, enough memory for your crew and mods, Workshop and LuaCs support, config access, backups, refund terms and the regular price. Hosts without a live Barotrauma product were left out. Prices come from each host’s public plan page, converted at £1 = $1.33. Our full process is on how we compare.
The 14 best Barotrauma server hosts, reviewed
Each review covers the plan that suits a Barotrauma crew, what it costs and the detail that decides whether it fits your server.
LOW.MS
LOW.MS hosts Barotrauma in London from £5.64/mo ($7.50). Plans are priced by player slots rather than memory, so a crew of four pays for four and you can add slots as more friends sign on for the campaign.
Automatic cloud backups keep up to 20 copies of your saves, settings and mod configuration, and you can lock the important ones so a new backup never replaces them. Restoring takes one click from the panel, which matters in a game where one flooded reactor room can end a long campaign. A five-day money-back guarantee applies, and London keeps steering, repairs and combat responsive for players across Britain.
Support, billing and the control panel are covered in our full LOW.MS review.

You choose from 12 locations at checkout, including London, and backups restore in one click. A 24-hour money-back guarantee applies. It bills every 30 days rather than per calendar month.

How a Barotrauma server works, and why a dedicated one helps
Anyone can host Barotrauma from the game menu, but the session ends the moment the host quits, and the campaign save stays on their PC. A dedicated server runs on its own, so the crew can drop in whenever they like, the campaign carries on with whoever is online and no one has to keep their computer on for everyone else.
The server simulates the whole submarine: every wire, pump, door and reactor, plus water flooding between rooms, creatures outside the hull and the items your crew carries. Three things decide how much server you need:
- Crew size. A vanilla server holds up to 16 players, and every extra player adds movement, combat and voice chat to relay.
- Mods. Workshop submarines, items and creatures all load on the server, and large mod lists need noticeably more memory.
- Big moments. Load peaks when the hull breaches, fires spread and monsters attack at once, which is why a fast CPU matters more than many slow cores.
How much RAM does a Barotrauma server need?
Size your plan by crew and mods:
| Crew | Players | Sensible RAM |
|---|---|---|
| Small crew, vanilla campaign | Up to 6 | 2GB |
| Standard crew with a few Workshop mods | 8–12 | 3–4GB |
| Full 16-player crew or a heavy mod list | 12–16 | 4–6GB |
The hosts’ own tiers agree: Shockbyte puts eight players on 2GB and 16 on 3GB or more, BisectHosting suggests 4GB for seven to twelve players, and RespawnHost recommends 6GB for a modded 12-player campaign. Workshop mods are the wild card, so add a step if your crew likes big modded subs. Our hardware requirements guide explains how CPU, RAM and network trade off.
The files every Barotrauma server owner should know
Most hosts here put the common settings in a panel, but these are the files behind them:
| File or setting | What it controls | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| serversettings.xml | Server name, password, max players, game mode, traitors, karma | The core of how your server plays |
| Data/clientpermissions.xml | Admin and moderator permissions by SteamID | Gives your crew leads the commands they need |
| Port 27015 (UDP) | The game port; 27016 is the query port | Friends need it to connect directly |
| Mods (content packages) | Steam Workshop mods enabled on the server | Players download them automatically on joining |
You can set the game mode, the traitor and karma options, the respawn rules and the bot count from the server lobby once you have admin rights, and the server writes them back to serversettings.xml. Add your own SteamID to clientpermissions.xml first, so you can run console commands and manage the campaign from inside the game.
Campaign, missions and PvP
Most groups rent a server for the multiplayer campaign. Your submarine, upgrades, money and faction reputation are saved on the server between sessions, so the crew can play a mission or two each evening and pick up where they left off. The campaign is also where a bad night hurts most, which is why lockable or one-click backups are worth having before a risky mission.
Mission mode runs one-off scenarios without a long-term save, PvP mode puts two crews in two submarines against each other, and sandbox lets you build and test subs freely. Traitors can be switched on for a crew that enjoys suspicion and sabotage, and the karma system can automatically punish players who grief. Bots can fill any empty roles, so a small crew still has someone in engineering.
Workshop mods and LuaCs
Barotrauma has one of the busiest Steam Workshops of any co-op game, with new submarines, items, creatures and overhauls. Mods are content packages: enable them on the server and players download them automatically when they join, so the whole crew stays in sync without manual installs.
LuaCs, the community Lua and C# framework, goes further and lets mods change how the game itself behaves. It needs installing on the server, so check your host supports it; Physgun does. Back up before adding mods or updating the game, because a major Barotrauma update can break mods until their authors catch up. LOW.MS keeps up to 20 cloud backups that you can lock, Physgun includes 30GB of secure backups and PingPlayers restores in one click.
Barotrauma hosts with UK servers
6 of the 14 hosts show a London or UK location for Barotrauma:
| Host | UK location | Entry price |
|---|---|---|
| LOW.MS | ✓ London | £5.64/mo ($7.50) |
| PingPlayers | ✓ London | £2.25/30 days ($2.99) |
| Physgun | ✓ London | £4.13/mo ($5.49) |
| GTX Gaming | ✓ London | £6.00/mo ($7.98) |
| Citadel Servers | ✓ London | From £0.32 ($0.43) per slot |
| Gaming Deluxe | ✓ UK | £6.00/mo ($7.98) |
Ping matters in Barotrauma because so much happens at once: one player steers, another fires the coilgun and a third welds a breach while water pours in. A server in London keeps those actions in sync for a British crew. Shockbyte, Cybrancee and several others set the location at checkout, so pick a UK or nearby European option if most of your crew is here.

Self-hosting vs renting a Barotrauma server
The Barotrauma dedicated server is free on Steam for Windows and Linux. Running it at home means opening port 27015 on UDP, keeping the PC on whenever the crew wants to play and updating the server and mods after every game patch.
| Self-host | Rented server | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free server software; you pay for power and bandwidth | From £2.25/30 days ($2.99) |
| Setup | Install, configs and port forwarding | Installed for you |
| Updates | Update the server and mods after every patch | Updated by the host |
| Uptime | Only while your PC is on | Online 24/7 |
| Security | Your home IP is shared with every player | Host’s network and DDoS protection |
Our self-hosting guide and guide to dedicated hosting cover the trade-offs.
