Arma 3 runs most AI on the server’s main thread, so a busy Zeus op or Antistasi campaign can drop server FPS well below 20 and cause desync. A headless client is a second, invisible Arma instance that takes over AI, spreading the load onto another core.

Workshop mods, keys and load order
Most servers run CBA_A3 plus ACE, RHS, TFAR or ACRE. The server needs the same mods as players, loaded through the -mod and -serverMod parameters, and each mod’s .bikey in the keys folder so signature checks work.

Altis Life, Exile and database servers
Altis Life and Exile store players, money and vehicles in a MySQL database through extDB3. A host that includes MySQL, like Citadel Servers, or ships a ready Altis Life version, like ZAP-Hosting, saves the hardest part of the setup.
Life servers also need more slots than unit ops, so per-slot pricing at LOW.MS, ScalaCube or Citadel becomes the main cost driver.
Ports, server.cfg and basic.cfg
Arma 3 uses a block of UDP ports from the game port upwards:

server.cfg sets the hostname, password, mission rotation, difficulty and BattlEye. basic.cfg tunes bandwidth: raising MinBandwidth and MaxMsgSend helps busy servers. A host’s panel usually exposes both files.
DLC and Creator DLC on servers
A dedicated server can run DLC maps such as Tanoa or Livonia, but every player needs to own the content to play on them. Creator DLCs like Reaction Forces, S.O.G. Prairie Fire and Western Sahara must be loaded as mods. G-Portal lets you switch on Reaction Forces in its server settings.
