How a Counter-Strike: Source server works
Counter-Strike: Source is a classic Source-engine shooter. Friends can start a listen server from the game menu, but that ends when the host quits and leaves your configs on one PC. A dedicated server runs on its own, so your map cycle, SourceMod plugins, admin list and ban file stay online for the whole group.
Three things decide how much server you need:
- Player count. A 5v5 pug is light; a 32-player public server with voice and plugins needs more CPU and memory.
- Plugins. SourceMod and Metamod power admin menus, map votes, surf, zombie escape and GunGame. Busy plugin lists use more RAM.
- Tick and maps. Higher tick rates and large custom maps push the CPU harder than a stock de_dust2 rotation.
How much RAM does a CS:S server need?
Size your plan by players and plugins:
| Server | Players | Sensible RAM |
|---|---|---|
| Private pug / 5v5 | 8–12 | 1–2GB |
| Community with SourceMod | 16–32 | 2–3GB |
| Large public or heavy plugins | 32–64 | 3–4GB+ |
Physgun’s 1GB entry plan covers a small pug; BisectHosting puts up to ten players on 2GB and 21–32 on 4GB. Add a step if you run heavy SourceMod packs or many custom maps. Our hardware requirements guide explains how CPU, RAM and network trade off.
The files every CS:S server owner should know
Most hosts put the common settings in a panel, but these are the files behind them:
| File or setting | What it controls | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| server.cfg | Hostname, rcon, rates, map cycle and tick settings | The core of how your server plays |
| addons/sourcemod/ | SourceMod plugins and configs | Custom modes, admin menus and map votes |
| mapcycle.txt | The maps that rotate after each match | Keeps the server on the maps your players want |
| Port 27015 (UDP) | The game and Steam query port | Friends and the server browser need it |
Install SourceMod and Metamod into the addons folder, add yourself as an admin, then restart. Keep a backup of server.cfg and your ban list before big plugin changes.
Pugs, surf, GunGame and community modes
Most groups rent a server for 5v5 pugs or a rotating public map cycle. SourceMod opens the door to surf, bunnyhop, zombie escape, GunGame, deathmatch and custom admin tools. Pick a host that lets you upload plugins over FTP or SFTP and restart from the panel without opening a ticket.
Rcon and SourceMod admins should live in separate configs so you can rotate passwords without rewriting the whole server. Back up before a game update: Source engine patches can break plugins until their authors catch up.
Counter-Strike: Source hosts with UK servers
5 of the 9 hosts show a London or UK location for CS:S:
| Host | UK location | Entry price |
|---|---|---|
| Physgun | ✓ London | £2.25/mo ($2.99) |
| GTX Gaming | ✓ London | £4.50/mo ($5.99) |
| Kinetic Hosting | ✓ UK | £3.75/mo ($4.99) |
| PingPlayers | ✓ London | £6.74/30 days ($8.97) |
| Gaming Deluxe | ✓ UK | £4.50/mo ($5.99) |
Ping matters in a twitch shooter: peeks, sprays and AWP shots all feel worse with delay. A London server keeps British and nearby European players on a fair footing. Shockbyte, BisectHosting and several others set the location at checkout, so pick a UK or nearby European option if most of your roster is here.

Self-hosting vs renting a Counter-Strike: Source server
The Counter-Strike: Source dedicated server is free via SteamCMD for Windows and Linux. Running it at home means opening port 27015 on UDP, keeping the PC on for every match and updating SourceMod after game patches.
| Self-host | Rented server | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free server tools; you pay for power and bandwidth | From £2.25/mo ($2.99) |
| Setup | Install, configs and port forwarding | Installed for you |
| Updates | Update the server and plugins after patches | Updated by the host |
| Uptime | Only while your PC is on | Online 24/7 |
| Security | Your home IP is shared with every player | Host’s network and DDoS protection |
Our self-hosting guide and guide to dedicated hosting cover the trade-offs.
