Methodology

How we compared Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord server hosts

We compared each host’s live Bannerlord product on what matters for a battle server: a London or nearby location, enough CPU and memory for bots, easy config and module uploads, backups, refund terms and the regular price. Hosts without a live Bannerlord product were left out. Prices come from each host’s public plan page or order form, converted at £1 = $1.33. Our full process is on how we compare.

LocationLondon first: melee hits and blocks are timed in fractions of a second, so ping decides fights.
CPU and memoryBots are simulated on the server, so bigger battles need more of both.
Config accessA config editor or file access for factions, bots and rules.
ModulesSFTP or SSH to load custom multiplayer modules.
PriceRegular monthly price, not first-month deals.
RefundsA low-risk way to try a host before your clan moves in.

How it works

What a Bannerlord server runs, and what it does not

Bannerlord’s custom servers are for multiplayer only. They run TaleWorlds’ official modes, Captain, Skirmish, Siege, Battle, Team Deathmatch and Duel, on maps made for each mode. The single-player campaign in Calradia is not something a rented server can host, so if your group wants to play the story together, a custom server is the wrong tool.

What the server does do is referee every fight. It decides whether a swing landed or was blocked, tracks every horse and arrow and, crucially, runs the AI soldiers. That is why Bannerlord sizing is different from most games:

  • Bots are the real load. In Captain each player commands a squad, so 12 players with 25 troops each is 300 soldiers the server has to think for.
  • Clock speed beats core count. Battle logic leans on a fast core, so a modern high-clock CPU matters more than a long list of cores.
  • Ping is felt in every duel. Directional blocking only works if the server sees your block in time, which is why a London server makes such a difference for UK players.
RAM

How much RAM does a Bannerlord server need?

Size your plan by mode and bot count, not just by players:

ServerPlayersSensible RAM
Duel or small Skirmish with friendsUp to 122–4GB
Captain or Team Deathmatch community12–324–6GB
Siege or Battle with lots of bots32+8GB+

The hosts’ own tiers follow the same pattern: BisectHosting suggests 2GB for up to 16 players, 4GB for 17 to 32 and 8GB beyond that, and Physgun steps from 4GB to 8GB for busy sieges. If you plan to fill sieges with bots, size up a tier. Our hardware requirements guide explains how CPU, RAM and network trade off.

Setup

The settings that shape a Bannerlord server

Whichever host you choose, the server is driven by a token and a short config file:

SettingWhat it doesWhy it matters
Hosting tokenLinks the server to your TaleWorlds accountWithout it the server cannot sign in
GameTypeCaptain, Skirmish, Siege, Battle, Duel or TeamDeathmatchDecides the map pool and the load
CultureTeam1 / CultureTeam2Faction for each side, e.g. vlandia and sturgiaSets the troops and equipment
NumberOfBotsTeam1 / 2AI soldiers per sideThe biggest single driver of CPU
MaxNumberOfPlayersPlayer capMatch it to your plan and mode

The hosting token comes from your own copy of Bannerlord: you generate it from the in-game console with customserver.gettoken, then upload the token file to the host. The server signs in with it, which is how TaleWorlds ties custom servers to a real account. Hosts such as Physgun put the remaining settings in a panel, so you choose the game mode, map, factions, bots, round time and friendly fire from a list rather than editing commands by hand.

UK servers

Bannerlord hosts with UK servers

6 of the 8 hosts show a London or UK location for Bannerlord:

HostUK locationEntry price

Physgun✓ London£7.89/mo ($10.49)

Gaming Deluxe✓ London£14.99/mo ($19.94)
Blue Fang Solutions✓ London£15.03/mo ($19.99)
Citadel Servers✓ LondonFrom £0.32 ($0.43) per slot

Bannerlord’s combat rewards timing: a block raised a fraction too late lets the hit through. A London server keeps that window fair for players across Britain, while a server in the US adds enough delay to make duels feel unfair. Shockbyte and BisectHosting set the location at checkout, so pick a UK or nearby European option if most of your players are here.

Modules

Custom game modes and multiplayer modules

Beyond the official modes, Bannerlord supports custom multiplayer modules that load next to the game’s Native module. They can change rules, add game modes or bring new maps. The catch is that every player needs the same modules installed to join, so keep your community’s mod list short and posted somewhere obvious.

To upload modules you need file access. Physgun gives you SFTP, SSH and a VS Code editor for the Modules folder, and GTX Gaming and most of the others offer FTP. Back up before adding a module, because one incompatible file can stop the server starting; GTX’s backups can be downloaded to your own PC as well.

TaleWorlds offers a free dedicated server for Bannerlord through Steam, so you can run one on your own PC. You still need a hosting token from your account, a config file and an open port, and the PC has to stay on whenever your clan plays.

FAQ

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord server hosting FAQ

What is the best Bannerlord server host in the UK?

GTX Gaming is our #1, with London included and plans from £14.99/mo ($19.94). Our GTX Gaming review covers it in depth.

Can I host the Bannerlord campaign on a server?

No. Custom servers run the multiplayer modes only, such as Captain, Siege and Duel. The campaign is single-player.

How much RAM does a Bannerlord server need?

About 2–4GB for duels or small skirmishes, 4–6GB for a Captain or Team Deathmatch community and 8GB or more for sieges with lots of bots.

Why do bots matter so much?

The server simulates every AI soldier. A Captain match with 12 players and 25 troops each is 300 soldiers, which is far more work than the players themselves.

What is a Bannerlord hosting token?

A file generated from your own copy of the game with the console command customserver.gettoken. You upload it to the host and the server signs in with it.

Which game modes can a Bannerlord server run?

Captain, Skirmish, Siege, Battle, Team Deathmatch and Duel, plus custom modes from multiplayer modules.

Do players need my custom modules?

Yes. Players need the same modules installed to join, so keep the list short.

Which Bannerlord hosts have UK servers?

6 of the 8 hosts here show a London or UK location, including GTX Gaming and Physgun.

What is the cheapest Bannerlord server hosting?

BisectHosting starts at £4.50/mo ($5.99) for 2GB and Shockbyte at £6.01/mo ($7.99) for 12 players. See our cheap game server hosting guide.

Can I get a refund if a host does not suit me?

GTX Gaming offers a 24-hour refund, Physgun a three-day money-back guarantee and Shockbyte a 72-hour self-serve refund.
