Valheim Dedicated Server Requirements: RAM, CPU and Player Slots

Valheim dedicated servers support persistent multiplayer worlds for up to ten players, but Iron Gate does not publish a universal minimum RAM or CPU specification for every host. This guide separates documented server requirements from practical capacity estimates, then connects those estimates to real hosting package decisions.

Official Valheim dedicated server requirements

Iron Gate documents the dedicated server software, the default server port range and Linux runtime dependencies, but not a fixed official 4 GB or 8 GB RAM requirement.

The dedicated server is available via Steam’s Tools library. The official guide lists Linux requirements including GLIBC 2.29, GLIBCXX 3.4.26 and libraries such as libatomic1 and PulseAudio-related packages. A host’s Linux distribution and container image therefore matter for compatibility.

The official documentation specifies the default ports 2456 and 2457 for the Steam backend. These are network requirements, not indicators of how much memory you need. See our step-by-step installation guide for startup commands and configuration.

How much RAM does a Valheim server need?

Valheim server RAM demand depends on concurrent players, active world state, modifications and server configuration, so memory should be selected as a range rather than a universal number.

RAM is used for the dedicated server process, loaded world data, runtime overhead and any additional software on the machine. A package that advertises memory alone does not tell you how much is reserved for the game, whether the host oversells CPU time or how backup operations affect performance.

A reasonable buying process is to start with the smallest plan suited to your group, verify the host supports upgrades without losing world files, and watch memory usage after the first real play session.

GroupPlanning RAMHow to interpret it
2 playersAbout 4 GBConservative entry tier, not an official minimum
4 players4–6 GBVanilla start; increase for mods or busy bases
6–8 players6–8 GBMore headroom for simultaneous world activity
9–10 players8 GB or moreTest live usage before treating the tier as sufficient

CPU: why core speed and contention matter

Valheim’s server simulation benefits from adequate per-core performance, and a generous RAM allocation cannot compensate for heavily contended CPU resources.

A provider that advertises “unlimited RAM” may still have CPU fair-use rules, while a plan with a named modern processor may still run on shared hardware. Look for a clear CPU policy, practical upgrade paths and user-visible resource usage rather than choosing by processor brand alone.

We do not publish fabricated tick-rate, latency or CPU benchmark results. For demanding worlds, test the actual configuration with several simultaneous players, active combat and constructed areas.

Player slots are not RAM allocations

Valheim’s native player limit and a hosting company’s package slots are different concepts: slots are a commercial cap, while RAM and CPU describe compute capacity.

A four-slot package with uncapped RAM does not automatically support a ten-player world. Conversely, a ten-slot plan with constrained hardware can still run poorly under load. Verify whether the host charges by slots, RAM or a fixed all-inclusive server.

Our 55-provider Valheim hosting comparison displays plan structures so you can compare a genuinely usable four-player server instead of confusing one-player teaser prices with normal group hosting.

Vanilla versus modded Valheim server requirements

A modded Valheim server can require more memory and CPU headroom than an equivalent vanilla world, but the exact increase depends on the mods and their compatibility.

Iron Gate states that Valheim has no official mod support and that updates may break third-party modifications. For a modded 1.0 world, confirm the precise BepInEx and mod versions before buying extra memory: more RAM cannot resolve incompatible plugins.

Choose a host with file access, a separate staging backup and quick plan upgrades. Before installing or updating mods, follow our server backup and restore guide.

Should you self-host or rent a Valheim dedicated server?

Self-hosting gives you direct control but requires a continuously available computer, stable connectivity, port or relay configuration and your own recovery process.

Renting removes much of the always-on hardware burden and usually provides a control panel and managed network, though actual limits, support and backup retention differ. UK groups should compare London and nearby European nodes, taking routing and real latency into account.

We distinguish the developer’s published documentation from our own buying advice. Operating-system paths, host panels and game builds can change; check your current version before editing a live server.

Lifelong survival gamer · Server nerd · Sweden/UK

I'm an avid gamer from Sweden with a lot of time spent in England in the last 5 years who loves survival games — ARK, Palworld, Valheim, Sons of the Forest, V Rising and plenty of WoW and Dota 2 on the side. I created this site to help other gamers find the best server hosting without wasting money on laggy providers.

I've been hosting my own game servers since Minecraft first came out, from Hamachi LAN nights with friends to modded survival worlds and dedicated servers for ARK, Valheim and Palworld. Years of running, breaking and fixing servers taught me what actually makes a host worth paying for, and that's what I share here.

How we compare: Prices, specs and server locations are checked against each provider's own website and compared on price-to-performance.
