Valheim Server Backup and Restore: Protect Your World in 2026
Valheim dedicated servers save their world automatically and can retain rotating backups, but server owners should also keep an independent copy before updates, mod changes or migration. Iron Gate documents a default 30-minute save interval and four retained automatic backups; these settings are not a substitute for an off-server recovery copy.
How often does a Valheim dedicated server save?
Iron Gate documents -saveinterval 1800, which means an automatic save every 1,800 seconds (30 minutes) by default.
That interval is configurable, but shortening it does not automatically improve backup protection: saves and recoverable backup versions are separate mechanisms. Saving frequently can preserve recent changes while also preserving an unwanted change quickly.
For a group world, coordinate maintenance during low activity and stop the server cleanly before copying live world data.
-saveinterval 1800How many automatic Valheim backups are kept?
The dedicated-server guide documents -backups 4 by default, with one short-interval backup and three longer-interval backups.
Iron Gate’s documented defaults include -backupshort 7200 for a two-hour short interval and -backuplong 43200 for a 12-hour long interval. Treat these as rotation settings, not guaranteed cloud storage or permanent historical archives.
The backup system and the host’s own platform snapshots can be different. Ask your provider whether its backups are stored on separate infrastructure and how long they are retained.
| Argument | Documented default | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
-saveinterval | 1800 seconds | Regular world-save interval |
-backups | 4 | Automatic retained backup count |
-backupshort | 7200 seconds | Short-backup spacing |
-backuplong | 43200 seconds | Long-backup spacing |

The safest Valheim backup captures the complete world data after a clean save and stop, then stores it somewhere separate from the running server.
The 1.0 release involved changes to the save system and newer worlds may use chunked, directory-based storage. Do not follow an outdated instruction that assumes two old-format files are always sufficient.
Create a dated archive of the whole selected world directory, the launch configuration and any relevant permissions. Keep the archive outside the game-server account when practical.
- Warn players and disconnect everyone.
- Perform a save where supported and stop the server gracefully.
- Identify the actual save root, including any custom
-savedir. - Copy the complete world data and record the game version.
- Store at least one backup outside the server account.
- Restart the server and confirm normal operation.
Restore a Valheim server from backup
Restore a Valheim world by stopping the server, preserving the current damaged state, replacing the selected world data with a known-good complete backup and confirming the correct world loads.
On a managed host, use the panel’s Restore function if it is documented for your game build. For manual recovery, place the backup in the configured save directory without changing its internal structure, then select the corresponding world.
After restoration, test an established location and confirm recent expected progression. If only some chunks or structures are missing, stop and investigate rather than allowing more writes to overwrite useful older restore points.
Offsite backups versus built-in rotating saves
Built-in Valheim backups protect against some local mistakes, while an independent offsite backup also helps when the hosting machine, account or storage volume fails.
Evaluate a provider’s backup system by its storage location, frequency, retention, restore process and whether the user can export copies. “Daily backup” is less useful when the only backup shares the same failure domain as the production server.
The Valheim hosting comparison identifies providers that advertise off-server or cloud-backup features; verify current plan terms at checkout rather than assuming every package includes them.
What to back up before Valheim updates and mod changes
Before installing a Valheim patch or changing an unsupported mod stack, save the world and its relevant configuration as a versioned recovery point.
Iron Gate does not officially support mods, and hotfixes can affect world behavior or compatibility. Keep a pre-update backup that you can restore if the current build experiences errors.
If you are switching hosts, use our complete world transfer procedure to preserve both the source and destination.
How to verify a backup is actually usable
A backup is not fully trustworthy until you can restore it and verify the world contents, not merely see a ZIP file or a success message.
When possible, restore into a temporary instance running a compatible Valheim version. Confirm the server starts, a known base is present and the world saves cleanly once more. Record the result, the archive date and the game version used.
For a new server build, follow the dedicated server setup guide to confirm startup and network settings.
