DayZ Crossplay and Console Server Hosting Explained

DayZ splits its players into separate pools, and a private server cannot merge them. Here is exactly who can play with whom in 2026, including PC Game Pass and Switch 2, how console private servers work, what you can change on them without mods, and when a Steam PC server is the better buy.

Crossplay reality

No full cross-platform pool exists for DayZ. Treat Steam PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch 2 as separate places unless your group is specifically mixing Xbox consoles with Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass on a “Keyboard & Mouse” server.

PC Game Pass is not Steam

The Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass release is the Xbox build on Windows through Xbox Play Anywhere. That means Xbox server rules, Xbox browser, no mods, and no access to Steam servers.

Console private servers are limited by design

You can change server name, password, camera mode, time settings, loot and event XML files, and a few admin rules. You cannot load mods, add third-party admin tools, or turn a console server into a Steam server.

Buy for the right pool

If your friends are on Xbox, rent an Xbox pool server. If they are on PlayStation, rent a PlayStation server. If the group wants mods or needs to go beyond console limits, move to a Steam PC server instead.

Who can play with whom in DayZ in 2026

Start with the server pool, not the label on the box. This is where most mixed groups get caught out, especially when someone sees “PC Game Pass” and assumes it works like Steam. It does not.

Partly: PC Game Pass players only get “Keyboard & Mouse” servers in the Xbox pool (since Update 1.29).
Mods: Steam PC servers only. No console build and no PC Game Pass copy can load them.
Each column is a separate pool. The only overlap is Xbox consoles and PC Game Pass meeting on “Keyboard & Mouse” servers.

The key thing to notice is that the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass version belongs to the Xbox family, not the Steam PC pool. Since Update 1.29, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass version on Windows can meet in the same broad pool, but the Windows version only has access to “Keyboard & Mouse” servers. Steam remains separate, and no PC server setting opens it up to Xbox or PlayStation clients.

  • Steam PC pool: Steam players join Steam PC servers only. This is also the only place where DayZ mods are available.
  • Xbox pool: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and since 1.29 the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass version on Windows share the Xbox family. Existing Xbox owners also got the native Xbox Series X|S version at no extra charge. The catch is that the Windows version is limited to “Keyboard & Mouse” servers.
  • PlayStation pool: PS4 and PS5 share PlayStation servers. The PS5 version is the PS4 build running through backward compatibility, so it stays in the same PlayStation pool.
  • Switch 2 pool: DayZ Cool Edition launched on 20 August 2026, and community servers exist there as well. Treat Switch 2 as its own pool unless Bohemia says otherwise. Server sizes are lower there, with up to 60 players on Chernarus and Livonia, and 50 on Sakhal.

Expansion maps follow platform ownership too. Badlands is available on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation, and each player needs that DLC on their own platform to join a Badlands server. Switch 2 gets Badlands later, so Switch 2 servers stay on the other maps for now.

Why DayZ keeps platforms apart

This separation is deliberate. It is not a missing tick box in a host panel, and it is not something a server owner can override.

Controls and inventory are part of the balance

Bohemia has said full cross-platform play is technically viable, but there is a noticeable imbalance between platforms because of controls and inventory management. From a server point of view, that matters because DayZ is not just aim and movement. Fast inventory handling, quick swaps and how quickly you manage gear all feed into PvP, looting speed and how fights play out. Mixing input methods in one pool changes the practical balance of the whole server, not just who can log in.

The Microsoft Store version is the Xbox build, not a second PC build

PC Game Pass creates most of the confusion because the player is sitting at a Windows PC, but the game is still the Xbox build through Xbox Play Anywhere. That is why it uses the Xbox pool, cannot use mods, and does not join Steam servers. From the server side, the important bit is build compatibility: a Steam server expects Steam clients and Steam-side mod support, while the Microsoft Store version expects the Xbox rule set.

Mods split the ecosystems even further

Steam servers can load mods; console servers cannot. The reason is not a weak console panel. It is the platform rule set. Sony and Microsoft do not allow DayZ’s mod model on those platforms, so Bohemia keeps the console service fixed and lets owners adjust the economy through approved XML files instead of loading extra code. That reduces flexibility, but it keeps every console client in a predictable, approved state.

The “Keyboard & Mouse” restriction for the Microsoft Store version is the compromise. It lets a Windows player access the Xbox pool, but only on servers that follow that input rule, which keeps the fairness problem contained. If a PC Game Pass friend can see some Xbox servers but not yours, check that first. Also check voice chat: on the Microsoft Store version, VOIP is tied to Microsoft age verification, so an unverified account can join the server and still sound as if voice is broken.

What a console private server actually is, and how you get one

Official servers exist on every platform. Private servers are community servers that you rent. On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch 2, those community servers are provided through one official console route: Bohemia’s console server partner, Nitrado. That is why a normal PC host cannot sell you an Xbox or PlayStation server by flipping a setting. The console build has to live inside Bohemia’s approved service path, which works differently from how game server hosting works for an ordinary PC title.

A console server is rented inside its platform’s pool from the start. It cannot be converted later.
  1. Pick the pool first. Choose Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2 based on where your actual players are.
  2. Rent the correct console community server. A Steam DayZ server does not become an Xbox or PlayStation server later.
  3. Set the basics in the partner panel. Name, password, camera mode, player count and other approved options live there.
  4. Restart the server. DayZ console settings and the server name apply only after a restart, because the running instance has to reload its configuration.
  5. Wait about 5 minutes, then search in the in-game COMMUNITY tab. If it is missing, search alphabetically with region set to “All” and check again.
  6. Invite only players from the same pool. If the server is in the Xbox pool, a Steam friend still will not see it.

On Xbox, management is done through the official console partner’s Xbox app or web interface. There is no in-game admin on console, so tasks such as kicks, bans and whitelist management happen in the web interface rather than inside the session itself. That matters because many owners expect the kind of live admin tooling they know from Steam servers, and console DayZ does not work that way.

What you can and cannot change on a console DayZ server

Use the quick comparison below to separate “private server” from “full PC server”. Console DayZ gives you real control over rules and economy, but it is a fixed service with approved file edits, not an open mod platform.

Camera mode Yes, 1PP only or 1PP/3PP Yes
Time settings Yes Yes
Password / whitelist Yes Yes
Loot rules via types.xml Yes Yes
Events and vehicles via events.xml Yes Yes
Mods No Yes
Third-party admin tools No Yes
Full server logs No, admin logs only Yes

You can change server name, camera mode, crosshair, start time, time acceleration, time persistence, password, whitelist, message of the day and player count. You can also restart, shut down, kick, ban, view and download admin logs, and reset persistence for a wipe.

What is forbidden on console servers:

  • Mods of any kind
  • Third-party admin tools
  • Monetisation not approved by Bohemia
  • Impersonating official servers
  • Accessing logs other than admin logs

The reason these limits exist is structural, not arbitrary. Console DayZ is delivered as a tightly controlled service so that every client in that pool stays compatible with the same build and the same platform rules.

Customising without mods: the XML files that matter

On console, the XML files are your rule set. They replace the mod layer by letting you change how the central economy spawns, saves and cleans up the world. Each file changes a different part of the simulation, so it pays to know which one you are touching.

  • types.xml: controls loot nominal and minimum counts, lifetime, restock, and categories or tiers. This works by telling the economy how many of an item should exist and where it is allowed to appear. More loot means more world objects for the server to track and save. The player trade-off is obvious: generous loot speeds everyone up, but too much of it can flatten scarcity and leave more clutter to persist.
  • events.xml: controls vehicles, helicopter crashes, animals and infected events. More events mean more active entities to spawn, update and save. Players feel it as a busier world, and the server feels it as more things to manage.
  • globals.xml: controls cleanup timers, zombie and animal caps, and how long bodies or items take to despawn. Raising caps or making objects live longer keeps more entities in the world at once, which again gives the server more to update and save.
  • economy.xml: controls which parts of the economy persist and save. This is more about world continuity and wipe behaviour than raw performance, but it decides what is saved and what comes back after a restart.
  • messages.xml: controls scheduled server messages. They cost the server next to nothing, and they matter to players because clear restart warnings prevent lost progress and confused reconnects.

The safest routine is simple, because one broken XML tag can stop loot or stop the server loading as expected.

  1. Back up the original file before you touch it.
  2. Edit one file at a time.
  3. Restart the server so the running instance reloads that file.
  4. Check the intended result in-game before you move on to the next file.
  5. If the change failed, restore the backup first instead of stacking more edits on top.

The excerpt below shows the shape of one types.xml entry, with values left out. Keep the exact structure already used in your file and change values carefully rather than pasting new markup blind. For messages.xml, copy an existing message entry and edit its text and timing, so the format stays exactly as the game expects.

<!-- types.xml: change how many of one item the economy aims to keep -->
<type name="YOUR_ITEM">
  <nominal>...</nominal>
  <min>...</min>
  <lifetime>...</lifetime>
  <restock>...</restock>
</type>

Time settings are another useful lever. Console servers allow a time multiplier from 0 to 24 and a night multiplier from 0.1 to 64. These values mostly change player experience rather than server load: shorter nights reduce waiting, longer nights favour groups that want a harsher schedule. The other good habit is scheduled restarts. The developers recommend restarting a DayZ server 4 to 6 times a day because restarts reload the economy cleanly and apply configuration changes; the trade-off is brief downtime, so use messages.xml to warn players first. If you later move to PC and want deeper host-side control, DayZ server performance tuning becomes the next layer beyond these XML edits.

Best choice for mixed platform groups

No amount of server spending bridges pools that Bohemia keeps separate. The honest decision comes down to two questions: which pool has most of your players, and do you need mods?

Group makeup Best option Why
All Steam PC Steam PC server Everyone is already in the same pool, and this is the only route to mods and full PC admin tools.
All Xbox Xbox community server It keeps the whole group in the correct pool and avoids paying for a Steam server that nobody on Xbox can join.
Xbox + PC Game Pass An Xbox pool server that is listed as “Keyboard & Mouse” The Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass version is in the Xbox family, but it only accesses “Keyboard & Mouse” servers. Check that label before the group commits to a server.
Xbox + PlayStation Two separate servers, or everyone buys into one platform There is no Xbox/PlayStation crossplay pool to rent into existence.
Steam + Xbox Everyone buys on the same platform, or run two servers Steam does not join Xbox servers, and the Xbox or PC Game Pass build does not join Steam servers.
PlayStation only PlayStation community server PS4 and PS5 already share one pool, so this is the straightforward console choice.
Switch 2 only Switch 2 community server Switch 2 has community servers, but it should be treated as its own pool. Badlands arrives later there.
Group that wants mods Steam PC server Mods are impossible on console servers and on the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass build.

If your group is split between Steam and console, the uncomfortable answer is usually the right one: either the PC players buy the console platform version that matches the rest of the group, or the console players move to the Steam version, or you maintain two separate servers. There is no single DayZ server product in 2026 that merges Steam, Xbox and PlayStation into one shared world.

Friend can’t see or join the server

Most join failures come down to the wrong pool, the wrong server type, or a restart that has not propagated yet. Use the flow first, then the symptom table if you already know what the failure looks like.

Most “can’t join” reports stop at the first question: the friend is on a different platform pool.
Symptom Likely cause First fix
Server not in list after renting The server was not restarted after naming it, or the browser has not indexed it yet, or you are not looking in the COMMUNITY tab Restart it, wait about 5 minutes, then search again in the COMMUNITY tab alphabetically with region set to “All”
Settings didn’t change Console settings apply only after restart Restart the server, then check the new rule set again
Game Pass friend can’t find Xbox server The Windows player is on the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass build and the server is not a “Keyboard & Mouse” server Check that the server is listed as “Keyboard & Mouse”. If it is not, that friend cannot join it from PC
Steam friend can’t see Xbox server Steam and Xbox are different player pools Use the Xbox-platform version for that friend, or move the whole group to Steam
Can’t hear PC Game Pass friend Microsoft age verification is blocking VOIP on that account Check the Microsoft account verification settings, then reconnect and test voice again
Console friend can’t join Badlands server The player does not own the DLC on that platform, or the platform does not have the map yet Confirm the player owns Badlands on their own platform, then restart the game and search again
Loot vanished after types.xml edit A broken XML tag or invalid edit stopped the economy behaving properly Restore the backup, undo the last change, restart, then edit one file at a time and check admin logs

If players can see the server but fail to enter, check the simple access controls next: password, whitelist, and whether you changed the server after they first searched for it. On console, those rules live in the external admin interface, so make sure the panel and the running server match after the last restart.

When to choose a Steam PC server instead

Move to Steam PC when your problem is flexibility, not just privacy. A console community server is good for a private world inside one console pool, but it stays inside that fixed service model.

Requirement Stay on console community server Move to Steam PC server Why this points the choice
Private server for one console pool Yes Not necessary Console hosting already covers this cleanly for Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2 groups.
Mods No Yes Only Steam PC supports DayZ mods.
Player counts beyond 100 No Yes PC community hosting can go past the console ceiling.
Full logs and third-party admin tools No Yes Console is restricted to admin logs and approved controls only.
Steam and console players on one server No No This is a platform split, not a plan-size problem. A Steam server does not solve Xbox or PlayStation access.
Deeper performance control Limited Yes Steam hosting gives you the mod layer, fuller logging and more host-side tools for diagnosis and tuning.

If you are heading that way, start with our DayZ server hosting comparison. It also helps to understand how much RAM a DayZ server needs before you move from a fixed console service to a Steam PC server. Just keep one expectation straight: moving to Steam gives you mods and more admin control, but it still does not create Steam/Xbox/PlayStation crossplay.

Need mods, fuller admin control, or a larger Steam community?

Compare Steam DayZ hosting options side by side before you move off the console model. That is the right path for modded servers, bigger communities, and deeper admin tooling.

DayZ server FAQ

Does DayZ have crossplay in 2026?

Not in the traditional sense. Steam PC, PlayStation and Switch 2 remain separate pools, and there is no host setting that merges them. The only technical overlap is within the Xbox family, where Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass build can meet on “Keyboard & Mouse” servers.

Can Xbox and PlayStation players play DayZ together?

No. Xbox and PlayStation use separate server pools, and a private server does not change that. If your group is split between those platforms, the practical choices are one platform purchase for everyone or two separate servers.

Can PC Game Pass players join Xbox DayZ servers?

Yes, but only in the specific case Bohemia allows. The Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass version runs the Xbox build on Windows, so it joins the Xbox pool and does not join Steam servers. It is limited to “Keyboard & Mouse” servers, which is the first thing to check if that friend cannot find your server.

Can you use mods on a DayZ console server?

No. Console DayZ servers do not support mods, and the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass build does not support them either because it is the Xbox build. On console, customisation happens through approved XML files such as types.xml, events.xml, globals.xml, economy.xml and messages.xml.

Can I rent an Xbox or PS5 DayZ server from any host?

No. Console community servers for DayZ go through Bohemia’s official console server partner, Nitrado. A normal PC DayZ host cannot sell you an Xbox or PlayStation server by switching the game build, because the console service path is separate from Steam hosting.
