Every comparison and review on GameServerHosting.co.uk follows the same process, so a host ranked third for Valheim is judged on exactly the same terms as a host ranked third for Minecraft. This page explains what we look at, where the data comes from and what never influences a ranking.
The five criteria
Each host is assessed against five criteria. They are the things that decide whether a UK community actually enjoys its server, rather than the things that look best on a sales page.
1. Hardware
The CPU model or generation where the provider publishes it, how much RAM a plan really allocates, the storage type and any limits on player slots. Single-core speed matters more than core count for most survival games, so a named modern CPU counts for more than a vague “high performance” label.
2. Control panel
Which panel the host runs and what it lets you change: file access, config editing, mod and Workshop tools, scheduled restarts, backups and restores. A panel that hides the server files makes modding and troubleshooting far harder.
3. Support
The support channels a provider publishes, whether its documentation covers the game in question and what its refund terms say. We report what the provider commits to in writing rather than anecdotes.
4. Value
What you get for the money on a plan a real group would run, not the cheapest headline tier. That means comparing RAM, slots and included features at a like-for-like size, and looking at the renewal price as well as the first bill.
5. Locations
Whether the host offers a London or other UK node, and if not, how close its nearest location is. For players in the UK, distance to the server is the single biggest factor in ping.
Where the data comes from
Prices, hardware specs and server locations are checked against each provider’s own website: its pricing pages, plan configurators, documentation and terms. When we quote a price, we record the date it was checked, so you can see how current it is. If a provider does not publish something, such as its CPU model, we say so rather than guess.
Prices change, and promotions come and go. If you spot a figure that no longer matches the provider’s site, let us know and it will be corrected.
Renewal price vs introductory price
Many hosts advertise a discounted first month or a launch code. We list the standard price a plan renews at wherever the provider publishes it, and treat introductory discounts as a bonus rather than the basis of a comparison. A host that is cheap for 30 days and expensive afterwards does not earn a value win on its promo price alone.
Why London and UK nodes come first
This site is written for players in the UK and Ireland, so location is judged from that point of view. A London or UK node keeps ping low for most British players; a Western European node can still be a sensible choice, but we make the difference clear. Where a host offers several locations, we note which ones are UK-based on its own location list.
No paid placements. Providers cannot pay for a position, a higher score or a review. Some outbound links are affiliate links, which help fund the site; they never change the order of a list or a score. Full details are in our affiliate disclosure.
What our scores are based on
Scores are built from published, verifiable information: specs, prices, locations, panel features, support channels and refund terms, assessed against the five criteria above. That keeps every review comparable and every claim checkable against the provider’s own site.
Who does the comparing
Every comparison is researched and written by Linus Pierre, a lifelong survival gamer and server nerd who has run community servers for ARK, Valheim, Sons of the Forest, V Rising and more. GameServerHosting.co.uk exists to help players find hosting that is judged on price-to-performance, not on who pays the most.
