Valheim Crossplay Server Setup: PlayFab, Steam and Console Players

Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay across its released platforms, and dedicated servers enable cross-platform connections through the PlayFab backend using the -crossplay launch argument. This guide explains how to enable that backend, how it differs from Steam-only hosting and how to troubleshoot join failures without confusing crossplay with mod compatibility.

Which Valheim platforms support crossplay?

Valheim 1.0 was announced with full crossplay among supported PC, Mac, Linux and console editions, including Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

Iron Gate’s 1.0 announcement lists Steam-compatible computer platforms and the supported console families. Some platform releases may be on a different hotfix build temporarily, so compatibility should be checked against current patch notes if a connection fails.

Crossplay refers to joining the same multiplayer world; it does not imply that save files automatically sync between every platform or that console versions support PC mods.

CapabilityWhat it means
CrossplayDifferent supported platforms can join the same compatible server
Cross-progressionSave syncing between platforms is separate and limited
ModsNo official Valheim mod support; console mods are not supported by Iron Gate
Server locationChoose a region that works for the players, not merely the platform mix

Enable the PlayFab crossplay backend

Add -crossplay to the current dedicated-server launch arguments or enable the corresponding crossplay control in your host’s panel.

Iron Gate states that -crossplay selects the PlayFab backend. Without the flag, the dedicated server uses the Steam backend, which is restricted to Steam users joining through that service.

If you rent hosting, confirm the control really changes the server backend and restart the server after updating its settings. Do not assume a marketing badge proves crossplay is enabled on your particular instance.

Join a crossplay Valheim server

Players can join a properly configured PlayFab crossplay server using the join-code and supported public server connection methods.

Iron Gate documents join code, public IP/port and server-list options for crossplay, but explicitly notes that local IP and loopback addresses cannot be used to connect to the PlayFab backend.

Verify the server is running and that every player is on a mutually compatible version before sharing connection details. The latest join-code UI may vary by platform and patch.

Do crossplay servers need port forwarding?

PlayFab’s relay backend does not normally require home-router port forwarding to make a Valheim server reachable from outside your local network.

This differs from the Steam backend, for which Iron Gate documents ports 2456–2457 by default. If crossplay is enabled and friends cannot connect, investigate backend status, game build, join method and panel configuration before changing router rules at random.

For Steam-only setup and firewall guidance, see our dedicated-server installation guide.

Crossplay and Valheim mods are separate features

A Valheim host can support crossplay while third-party mods remain incompatible with some or all participating clients.

Iron Gate explicitly states that there is no official Valheim mod support and no official console mod support at the 1.0 release. A BepInEx installer in a hosting control panel does not change this.

For mixed PC/console groups, start with a vanilla server and test platform connectivity before attempting server-side changes. Back up the world before experimenting: Valheim server backups.

Why is my Valheim crossplay server not showing?

Common crossplay connection problems arise from using the wrong backend or join method, version mismatches or an offline server, not necessarily from insufficient RAM.

First verify the server log reaches “Game server connected.” Next confirm -crossplay is actually active. Test a valid join code or public connection rather than 127.0.0.1 or a LAN-only address.

Check platform patch versions, restart after any panel change and temporarily test without unsupported mods. If the world will not start after a mod update, use a known-good backup rather than repeatedly modifying the only copy.

  • Steam-only user cannot see server: verify whether the host is in PlayFab or Steam mode and use a compatible join method.
  • Console user cannot connect: verify PlayFab crossplay is enabled and platforms are on compatible patches.
  • Server works locally but not remotely: check Steam port forwarding or switch to the documented PlayFab relay workflow.
  • Server fails after changing mods: restore a clean configuration and verify game/mod versions.

Choosing a Valheim host for cross-platform groups

Choose a hosting plan that explicitly supports the PlayFab backend, offers nearby server regions, and lets you recover from configuration changes.

A clear crossplay setting and documented support workflow are more meaningful than a provider simply listing console icons. See our Valheim hosting comparison for UK/EU locations, plans and provider features.
